Endless Exhibition

The Endless Exhibition encompasses 19 installations, interventions and sculptures from Hamburger Bahnhof’s collection, all of which are permanently present at the museum as an integral part of its interior and exterior spaces. A tour leads through all parts of the museum complex and into the grounds and adjacent areas – interconnecting the collection, building, history and environs of the museum for the first time in this way.

Some of the artworks have been on view since Hamburger Bahnhof opened in 1996, while others were installed as part of solo exhibitions by artists. Others again were commissioned by the museum or donated to it. Their starting points, like the contexts in which they were created, differ widely: they make direct reference to the unusual architecture of the former railway station, lie hidden within the grounds, or take up the museum’s unusual location directly beside the former border between East and West Berlin. The Endless Exhibition is an opportunity for visitors to discover these works afresh. In addition to short texts offering insights into the individual works, six entries also spotlight the history of the building and the architectural traces, still visible today, of the former Museum of Transport and Construction.
The Endless Exhibition is thus also an ongoing journey through the history of the museum. With the opening of the Endless Exhibition, Hamburger Bahnhof’s collection will in future be expanded each year by a site-specific new production. Diversity is an important criterion in this regard – all the works in the past have been produced by male artists. Judith Hopf, whose commissioned work can be seen in the eastern entrance area from June 2023, will kick this off.
Exhibitions open, run and close. The Endless Exhibition remains.
